FUJAIRAH

Fujairah is the only emirate that lies on the eastern side of the U.A.E. along the gulf of Oman - while all other six emirates are situated along the Arabian Gulf. The Hajar Mountain range which divides the U.A.E. in two (from Ras Al Khaimah & Al Ain), kept Fujairah separated for a long time from the rest of the country.

Fujairah is not as wealthy as the two large oil rich emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi but landscape wise it has a lot to offer. The majestic Hajar Mountains, long empty beaches of the Indian Ocean and wadis (dried up river beds - which can be discovered either in a 4x4 or on foot). The oldest mosque in the U.A.E. is also to be found here. The colourful and interesting underwater world is the best in the Emirates and a must for diving enthusiasts or snorkelers!

Slightly different from the other emirates, Fujairah never profited from the pearl trade and does not own any oil fields. Most of the population is in one way or another tied to agriculture. Important for the prosperity of the emirates was the building of the free port in 1981, six years later the airport helped support the international cargo transport. In the meantime, Fujairah is planning to follow Dubai's lead in developing their tourism industry and quite a few hotel projects will be evolving over the next few years.
